"DAS RÄTSEL HITLERS“ or “THE ENIGMA OF HITLER”


Sculpture with an authentic very old French or Italian double bass scroll and driftwood on black granite pedestal, 109cmx47cmx40cm, VII-IX/2018, own collection

"DAS RÄTSEL HITLERS" is a tribute to and homage to Dalí's oil painting with the same title from 1939. Although it is not very famous it is one of his best paintings and a key art for the 20th century. It shows an old, dead tree which holds a melting telephone handset, dropping into a white dish which bears a photo from Hitler. It was made in the troubles of the last days before WWII has started.
The sculpture shows a melting, tear-like double bass scroll, which sculpts a big drop in crackled lacquer. The red-brown scroll stays in contrast to the grey rutted and dead driftwood. It bears an almost decayed photo of a faceless Adolf Hitler in Nazi uniform. The war and his ideology has cost Hitler`s head.

"DAS RÄTSEL HITLERS" ist eine Hommage an Dalís Ölgemälde mit demselben Titel von 1939. Obwohl es nicht sehr berühmt ist, ist es eines seiner besten Gemälde und eine Schlüsselkunst für das 20. Jahrhundert. Es zeigt einen alten, toten Baumast, der einen schmelzenden Telefonhörer hält und in einen weißen Teller tropft, das ein Foto von Hitler birgt. Es wurde von Dalí in den Schwierigkeiten der letzten Tage vor Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs gemacht.

Die Skulptur zeigt eine tränenartig schmelzende Kontrabassschnecke, die einen großen Tropfen krakelierten Lackes bildet. Die rotbraune Schnecke steht kontrastierend zum grauem und abgestorbenen Treibholz. Es zeigt ein fast verfallenes Foto eines gesichtslosen Adolf Hitler in Nazi-Uniform. Der Krieg und seine Ideologie haben Hitlers Kopf gekostet.
